Welcome to my channel, where I study video game animation for you. I answer such questions as:
Why do 8-bit video games have so few frames?
Why do 2D fighting games use smears so much?
Why do some enemies have the exact same animation?
How can characters do more than one animation at once?
How to make your game animation look better?
How explosions are animated?
We're never done learning!
VGAS is run by Dan Root, a 2D animator, animation lecturer and game dev.

The Key to Metroid Prime's Atmosphere
Not on topic but every RoboCop game on every platform that I ever played just sucked; period. I don't know what the issue is with that franchise but apparently it is not suitable to make good games out of it. And the reasons may vary but to me they all look bad, they all have poor control, they all are boring in the long run.
Silk song around the corner more like silk song on the far corner.
I love zero mission, it's second in place to super metroid in my opinion.
So glad to see you cover this amazing game! 🤩 Sad to see the studio shutdown before the game could really take off, hopefully itll get a second chance someday 😓 Also wanna give a big shout-out to the character artist Alex Ahad (@o___8)! His art and character designs are some of the best out there imo 😁👌
Watching this actually makes me appreciate why Silksong is taking so long. If they put this level of detail into every aspect of Silksong, a game that's supposed to be a *lot* bigger than Hollow Knight, then it can only be incredible when it's finally released!
This is the thought
“How does the game look scary? Well, in a very simple way actually, *it’s just black”* 💀💀💀💀💀💀💀
Now that Prime 4 got an announcment, a covering of AM2R (even if you consider it less valuable as a fan project) would make for a well timed fill in and opportunity to build hype for any possible future video you plan to make for Prime 4. If you think these Metroid animation videos do well for your channel, quite frankly youd be a fool to miss out on it. If they dont, i consider it a missed opportunity as a huge fan of both it and of course official Metroid, as well as your videos.
I find this video A waste of time. The comparison is literally in the title
Thanks for commenting on my video! 🥰
AM2R?
Same as Zero Mission and not official.
@@VideoGameAnimationStudy not anywhere near the same as zero mission, even if heavilly inspired, and not official is not a reason. Its a well accepted and even prefered M2 remake in the community, which makes its study valuable. That and the extensive effort put in by DrN64 in its creation makes it as worth observation and analysis as any of the efforts put forth by official teams.
Depends where you ask I suppose. I haven't played it, but I've seen videos of the gameplay. It just looks the same as Zero Mission's sprites and movement to me, nothing significantly different. I get that it's a massive undertaking for one developer to do, and it's commendable. I just wanted to focus on the official titles for this video, and I didn't see anything significantly different in the animation in AM2R.
@@VideoGameAnimationStudy one, it has unique animations built from the ground up, second, you covered the minute differences between other Metroid games with extraordinarilly similar or even the same animations anyways, third, they dont even have the same abilities, canon attacks (am2r has unique charge attacks for each canon upgrade), or enemies. There is SO much to compare and analyze. Weather youd want to frame it in terms of its evolution on zero missions style or as a comparison to Samus Returns its interesting and varried content as much as any of the other titles you have covered, and for all the same reasons you have covered ALL the rest. Look, ultimately its your channel, you are gonna do what you want. im just a fan, and i'll be looking forward to whatever other videos you do anyways. You dont have to listen to me, but please dont just dismiss a whole ass game with a thinly veiled excuse. Id rather you just shoot straight and say "i didnt plan to cover that game and am not interested in looking into it because ive moved on" than you say some pretty flat excuses that dont hold up with your previous actions or stated purpose of at least the first video in this series you made. If tbe purpose is to study the evolution of animation throughout the franchise, a franchise mind you made by several different teams across 3 or 4 decades now, than AM2R is as valid a part of that history (or more) than many if the games you have covered so far. More so given its unique background and unparalleled access to info on its development thanks to DrN64s QnAs and patch/dev notes throughout the process. Anyways, i hope this didnt come off as too combative, love your work either way, hope wherever you are you had a chiller day than i did where i live (had a 115 degree day over here) o7
Well aged title
The way she seamlessly climbs over ledges is such a great touch
Happy for them. Going from 3 animators to a lot more. Perks of doing good work for Nintendo!
Awesome video! I so very much want to see a video like this about Megaman X!
One day!
I'm usually not a fan of quick time events. But when they're normally cut scenes with button prompts in Dread they feel more like a natural continuation of the action. And there are no prompts. You just continue using whatever normal actions you can make.
Great essay. Aether in its normal state is just really weird and alien even if the game is trying to convince you that’s he good that you are fighting for. Samus is stranded, on a pointless rescue mission then by a chance of fate she braves the horrors of the dark dimension for a species of giant, endangered, psychic aliens. This game is my favorite of the three prime games, it’s not as good as prime one but it is unique in how utterly weird and spooky the world is. I feel like the devs had some really ambitious ideas and had to scale it back due to time restrictions. I wish they made the Ing a little more defined as they really didn’t have as much antagonist development or intelligence as the game’s text implies. Like it feels weird that throughout all the game you never get to see a possessed Luminoth either.
I love the ship from Echos as opposed to Prime 1, it reminds me of the Super Metroid ship. The rocket jets are old tech and that makes it seem like 21st century tech.
I really miss this series :( I really want to see VGAS' thoughts on prime 3, Samus Returns etc; not to mention Dread!
Maybe one day I'll come back to this.
Bro what is this guys problem 😂, alucards walk is fine, fits him perfectly
I don't have a problem? 🤔
"Fluid, smooth, tight" are all aspects of Samus I'm sure we all want to learn everything about.

"silksong around the corner" *Uploaded 4y ago*
It's good in design and gameplay but soundtrack as well as "plot" sucks ass. Practically moot.
Plot was a bit weak but served its purpose. Soundtrack is also probably one of the weaker ones, but stronger than Other M.
Its a crime your videos don't have more views i love them ❤
Thanks, they don't do too badly, considering.
@@VideoGameAnimationStudy not nearly enough lol btw have you ever played killzone 2? The animation in that game is amazing
12:27 classic
This is the perfect video for my current game design project, thank you
The amount of love the artists/animators put into this series is just straight up sickening. It's just a complete eye-gasm. You mentioned the 3D iteration, and while I didn't play it myself, it just looked so generic and devoid of..well..anything. There's just so much soul that goes into *good* pixel art and it's almost as much problem solving as anything else when you have 1 pixel that can make or break a pose - it's the limitations that force you to get good right? The metal slug vehicle character treatment reminds me of the early Pixar short "Luxo Jnr" (I'm sure you know it of course) and how they really conveyed that playful, goofy behaviour beautifully while still staying believable to it's physical form (more or less). It's so cool that so many games are coming out that are continuing the artform with some pretty striking presentation, but I can't think of any that have matched Metal Slug for just gratuitous stubborness to be the absolute benchmark 😉👍
Nintendo is so good at animations. This alone has a way better animation compared to all Mortal Kombat franchise, mainly the modern ones.
Well it's Mercury Steam who did the animations, but Nintendo use good studios to produce quality work.
You should fix the animation. I would love to see how you imagine he should run.
Im having alot of fun with it. Since I played and the original Metroid back in 89 on NES.
I love how this game forces you to get progressively better at controling Samus. By the end, you cant wait to beat it again with your new found confidence and skills. You dont just upgrade Samus, this game will upgrade your brain and dexterity!!!!😊
I love how the entire dark planet is basically the true enemy. It is invading and crippling down the original people of its world, the Luminoth, and consuming and corrupting it's entire species and enviromental system. Visitors from other planets like the Federation soldiers and Space Pirates are all dying like flies and both of their logs feel like from a horror movie, even when the Space Pirates logs are added with a bit dark humor. The Dark World and their Ings are parasites, with Dark Samus and the phazon sitting on top of them all.
I've always assumed he's moving extremely fast and we don't notice it because we're playing from his PoV.
8:41 Samus still swipes in a down to up motion, the angle is just lower while in the air
Metroid Dread, Blasphemous, Laika. Spain is really becoming a serious contender in game development.
Just need to amend that law about giving credit.
You can't compare a 3DS game to a switch game. It's obvious that is gonna be better because the console is more powerful. If it were to be the other way around it would be on purpose.
The power of the console doesn't have that much to do with the animation system. Smash Bros for 3DS manages to pull the same stuff as the Wii U.
@@VideoGameAnimationStudy you're telling me that the more powerful a console gets isn't able to have better animations.?
@@xolrak No, as an animator myself the power has nothing to do with it. The animations are determined by the program they are made in and the skill of the animator, not the engine they are exported to.
"Silksong around the corner". This is still valid.
fascinante
I wonder how many of the animators weren't mentioned in the credits.😢
Many
Yeah that situation sucked
Dread made me almost feel the same way when I was playing metroid fusion back in the day .
Bro predicted Metroid dread
This movement is one of the best in any side scroller ever. It's epic.
That is a fact
I think they made the speed like fusion because this is still fusion suit samus, the heavy chozo tech has been removed during the super to fusion transition, and the armor the federation can afford is only light here because (and I’m taking a shot in the dark with low evidence) the federation is still mad that their chance at having a “controlled” SA-X was lost to samus Aran.
I don't think anyone is going to read this, but after watching this video and others like this one, I firmly believe that a 3D Metroid game would benefit greatly from a Dark Souls 1 style world.
I read all my comments. And I think that'd be interesting!
@@VideoGameAnimationStudy I totally thought nobody would read a comment on a 7 year old video. I would love to see how Metroid developers would handle building an interconnected world like the one in DS1. Ever since I started watching Metroid critique videos, I've always thought that it would be a natural progression for the series. By the way, I love your content. In all honesty, I never really cared much for platformers or 2D fighting games. I probably would have hated Metroid if I had played it as a kid. But after watching your videos on it and many others like it, I am now 100% a fan of the Metroid series to the point that I even went out of my way to play AM2R and Dread. So thank you for turning me on to some amazing games. I am now fully invested in this franchise and I want to see what kind of interesting things they do with it from here on out.
Hoping for Metroid 6 or a Metroid Fusion Remake
Not sure if Fusion needs a remake or not, not so close to Dread anyway.
